Frequently Ask Questions
Will we need to have a meeting in connection with the website design?
In the majority of cases a meeting isn't necessary and most websites are generally completed with contact via e-mail and telephone only. I can place suggested website designs onto the Internet where you can view the content. I then liaise with you to discuss the web designs in order that the website design and functionality is exactly as you wish.
What is a domain name?
It's the common name that people use to direct their browsers to a web site and usually ends with ".com" or ".net" or something similar. You usually buy them for a 1 to 10 year period. You have to renew your ownership at the end of the purchased time, or the name becomes available to the public again.
These names are used to simply direct people to the server that is hosting your web site. If you decide to move your site to a different server, you allow people to still find you by "instructing" the domain name to send browsers to the new location.
What does it cost to get a domain name?
If I design your site, I will register 1 domain name for you at no additional cost.
If you arrange my domain name, who will own it?
You are the owner. You may request a transfer of your domain to your own management service, or another service at any time.
What's included in the hosting service you provide?
I'll set up your site on a host server, and deal with technical support when necessary.
Do you host sites on your own servers?
No. I purchase hosting space on your behalf.
What is bandwidth and how much will my site have?
Put simply, bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet. Your site will be set up for 1000 Mb to 8 GB of Bandwidth and 100 MB to 1000 MB of space depending on which plan you pick.
What does it mean to submit a site to a search engine, don't they just find you?
Most of the present day internet user uses Search Engines to find their needs. Many of the search engines use "spiders" to crawl the entire internet looking for website's. In theory, all websites will eventually be found and listed some day. Research has found that 98% search are carried out using top three search engines GOOGLE, YAHOO, BING, and MSN, I submit all web sites by hand rather than using automated software.
Once your site has been submitted to the top Search Engines they may require several weeks to actually spider and list your web site in their directory. How fast your site is listed depends on each individual Search Engines database update schedule.
If my site is submitted to a search engine, how often it will be submitted?
Most recommended interval is every month. In order to keep their results fresh for the searcher, search engines are continually changing the criteria which must be followed when submitting websites to them. Often, this may result in your website dropping in the search engine rankings, or even being dropped from their listing totally! I keep up with the most current search engine requirements and to optimize and re-submit your website as necessary to meet those requirements.
How can I promote my site?
There are many different ways to effectively promote your site, including off-line advertisement (business cards, hand-out literature) You can promote your site online by placing ads on other sites, getting other sites to link to yours, and joining web-rings and groups with similar interests.
How do links to my site (from other sites) make a difference?
One way that search engines rank the importance of your web pages is by considering how important they are to other web sites. Add a link back to your site from profiles, and any of your photo accounts on the web. Ask friends to add your link to their site, or join web-rings. Linking to your site will help generate more traffic and also improve your placement in search engines. Some examples of places to link back to your site:
eBay listings and posts on Craigslist.
Profiles on Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, Friendster, Orkut, etc.
Posts to blogs and photo sites (e.g. Blogger, LiveJournal, Flickr)
Posts and replies on discussion forums.
Do you provide an E-mail Account for me?
Your web-site does not include an personalized e-mail account. One can be added at an additional cost of $100 per year. If you decide to add an e-mail account, you will need to set-up your e-mail account in your computer e-mail program. You can use POP and SMTP to access email with programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Eudora, or Netscape.
After selecting the particular software package, you must configure the program to look for your e-mail . This means that you must give the program the appropriate account information for getting into your e-mail box. The relevant account information will be given to you when you sign-up for e-mail service.
Free alternative for a personalized e-mail account would be you.domain@ yahoo.com, email@example.com, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
